
i stumbled upon this sam shmith exhibition a couple of weeks ago at arc one.
it was a lovely little find, and equally nice to see that so many of the pictures had sold (and believe me, if i’d had the money i would have bought one myself: enlarged and simply framed these images were truly spectacular).
i must admit that the people that i visited the gallery with – both painters just visiting to look at the gallery space – were somewhat less impressed: ‘he’s just taken a photo out of a plane window!’, they said.
maybe, but that’s the biggest mistake when it comes to any form of art / design / self expression: it’s all very well thinking ‘i could do that’, but you didn’t.
more respect for the idea, i say..!




It’s not so easy taking a spectacular photo from a plane window. Regular people probably resonate with them because like me, they have flown and seen things that were astounding but were unable to take a decent photo.
