(two posts in two days? i know..!)
remember when skirts over pants / trousers were a thing? i’m not talking about last year or whenever when vogue tried to bring them back and we all ignored them. i mean in the late 90s when you used to be able to buy ‘skirts’ sewn on to pants. for, like, $15 in the ‘workwear’ department at kmart or something. eww, shudder, foul, I KNOW.
but also FOUL and FRUSTRATING is how it is nigh impossible to find dresses / skirts at any length other than that shown above. okay; i love these dresses, all of them. and if i could, i would totally wear them (you know i would). but i TOTALLY can’t. they are just WAY TOO SHORT, even that last one. even with leggings or, dare i say, trousers underneath. because i am quite tall – almost 5’10” – and er, quite un-gazelle / giselle like.
i also couldn’t wear any of those shoes; see the 5’10” bit and then multiply that by extreme clumsiness / uncoordination (yes, i know that’s not a real word), but that’s another story.
still: props to peter pilotto because despite my personal gripes this collection is ace.
I must have missed that recent attempt to bring the skirt over pants back in. But I distinctly recall the 90s trend. I had a pair that I used to wear with my baby blue platform sneakers ( and might I add that the platform shoe has very successfully been introduced, but it’s much less Spice Girls this time). It/they (I’m not sure exactly how to refer to the skirtpants) was/were from Target and was constructed in a delightful black cotton jersey. This was just before the Mytiko pants came in here in Melbourne (I bet they were HUGE in Geelong; perhaps they still are?).
What about a pair of opaque tights? They do wonders to minimise jiggle (I know – I may be somewhat gazelle/Giselle like but I have the thigh jiggle). How about jeggings (are they still in – I saw someone wearing them at Chadstone last week. Not that this is any indication of their fashion status)?
me: what the fuck are mytiko pants? (googles) OH MY GOD. THOSE. yikes.
ps. i was SO living in melbourne in the late 90s but i’m SURE geelong was rocking mytiko, too. or track and field pants…
pps. these dresses are beyond help for me, even with opaque tights…that karen walker one i got a couple of weeks ago remains unworn for the same reason; perhaps i’ll work up the courage to wear it this weekend, no promises (SLASH THREATS)
i have the exact same problem with skirts (5′!0″ ish + really long legs) and i am a total moron when it comes to wearing heels due to my lack of coordination. it’s nice to know i’m not the only one out there -ha!
I’m tall too, but I just love dresses too much. I sometimes wear a tightfitting skirt underneath a dress – you can get them where I live for a couple euros. This keeps me from mooning people without wanting to when I bend over to tie my shoes or pick something up. The skirt doesn’t show when I’m walking upright. Don’t even mention heels, uneven pavement is murder to me. I have a twisted swollen ankle right now.
ha! i just googled mytiko pants! i had no idea they had a name.
skirts over pants remind me of primary school when we would wear our netball skirts over tracksuit pants which meant you looked like your were wearing a nappy because there was so much fabric around your bum. Of course, when you’re 8, that’s not as big an issue but i was aware of how ugly it was even then.
wear your karen walker dress! do it!
belinda CLEARLY had some mytiko pants if she remembers the name so well, right? ;)
and YES to the netball thing. really. why not leggings? why didn’t we do that?!
